Introduction
India is one of the leading countries in the world in-terms of population and majority of it is entirely composed of women who are taking part in everyday activities as housewives and business women and others depending on caste system. In the old days during pre-colonial periods, there were no equal treatments in education matters since it was left only for the small number of men from Brahmin and those who were from the higher caste in the Indian community and to the few non Hindus who were privileged. During this time, the number of literate women was very low because there was no organized manner for educating women and in most cases those women who went to school were picked from the family circles (Kamat 2006). The modern education of Indian women started with the missionaries’ schools which were established early in the century. The Indian social reformers who had earlier got the western education realized the importance of educating women and this was one of the reasons which made them to steer efforts towards opening schools for Indian girls. Through the introduction of education to Indian women, many have been empowered which has led to the realization of social change in the Indian community.
Men and Women education in India
            Women in India have been traditionally given one duty and responsibility over the years which is being husbands’ property and looking after the family. According to the Indian traditions, this is the core role of any Indian woman and they have no mandate of challenging it, young ladies were socialized this way and being that they never went to school like the boys did. Indian society value men hence they are taken to schools at tender age to get inspired and ideas to help them in contrary to the ladies who get married at a tender age. The girls were denied the privilege of getting education and they grew up to be illiterate women and men grew up to be educated.
According to Srinivas (2005), the increase in the age of marriage through constitutional amendment has enabled the Brahmin girls to take advantage of the opportunities in the higher education to challenge the Men’s dominance in the educational sector. Traditionally they used to work around their mothers in the kitchen learning the domestic duties until their time for marriage. They were required to learn the domestic chores, to have knowledge on the caste and how to respect and obey her husbands’ in-laws and other elderly people. Education of the women has brought social change and narrowed the gender imbalance at workplace through women being employed as teachers, doctors and some as welfare personnel and many others. These professions were traditionally meant for men who were valued and educated by the society at the expense of women. Various states in India have provided free education for girls in order to encourage women education and there has been special focus on women. The education for women is different now in that they can be educated like the men and compete for the same positions. Over the recent years, the number of illiteracy has been steadily increasing among the Indian women hence narrowing the gap which has been existing between men and women.
Education on the Indian women has been significant in the roles played by various members of the society. For instance, women have been engaged in different tasks in the family and in the societies in general, as it was rightly said earlier, educate a woman and the whole family is educated, this has been proved by the Indian women through the multi tasking they undertake in the family, they are able to play the role of citizenship and at the same time being a housewife in-charge of the house. They play the role of motherhood and contribute to family income.
